Nearly 70% of fourth graders in Greater Boston and neighboring communities are not reading at grade level. Students are likely to be further off pace again this year due to the pandemic.
Literations is thrilled to partner with Boston Public Schools, several Boston Boys & Girls Clubs, and with Framingham Public Schools for the 2023-2024 school year. Join our team as a volunteer literacy coach and help students become stronger readers!
Literations is looking for older adult volunteers to serve in Boston and Framingham elementary Schools as Literacy Coaches. Literacy coaches work one-on-one with young 1st to 4th grade readers, giving students the opportunity to practice and strengthen their reading skills through 30-minute structured coaching sessions twice weekly. Utilizing our proven, evidence-based program, coaches build a mentoring relationship with their assigned students while helping them improve their reading skills.
Volunteer opportunities for the public schools typically operate weekly, Monday through Thursday, ranging from 8:00am until 3:30pm.
Volunteer opportunities for the after school programs typically operate weekly, Monday through Thursday, ranging from 3:00pm until 6:00pm.
You will work with the same students every week, in one-on-one sessions, to develop a relationship with the students, serve as a mentor, and see meaningful improvement in their reading skills. No previous teaching experience is required, just a desire to help children become better readers!
Literations provides extensive pre-service training to give you the tools you need to help students thrive. Our volunteers are supported by a Site Team Leader and attend monthly professional development meetings for ongoing support.
The commitment is a minimum of approximately 5 hours per week (served over 2 days, 2 to 2.5 hours each day) for the full school year. In addition to seeing students, coaches will be asked to log weekly session notes and hours, attend monthly Site Team Meetings, and annual training opportunities. We are only seeking in person volunteers.
Many of our sites have reached volunteer capacity and we are only accepting applications from individuals willing to serve at one of the 10 sites where volunteers are still needed. These 10 sites are listed on the volunteer application.
